What it is

Retro Bowl is an American football game drawn in the chunky pixels of a 1980s console. You take charge of a club and you stay with it: you play the offensive snaps yourself and you run everything around them — the roster, the coaching staff, the morale of players who do not like being benched.

Only the attacking half of each drive is played by hand. The defence is simulated, so a match is a sequence of short offensive possessions rather than a continuous game of football.

How it plays

A season runs across a schedule of fixtures and ends, if things go well, in the Retro Bowl itself. Between fixtures you spend coaching credits, sign and release players, and keep an eye on the salary cap, which is the real constraint in the game.

Individual drives are quick. A single sitting usually covers one or two matches plus the roster work around them, and the save carries the franchise forward.

Controls

On a computer you drag with the mouse to aim a pass and release to throw; the keyboard handles the menus and the roster screens.

On a phone or tablet the same throw is a touch-and-drag. The interface is built for the small screen first, so nothing is lost on mobile.

What to do first

  • Play a full season before you rebuild the roster. The default squad is good enough to learn the throwing on.
  • Watch the salary cap before you sign anyone. A star quarterback who breaks the cap costs you the rest of the team.
  • Upgrade the coaching staff early — it improves every player at once rather than one of them.

Where it trips people up

  • Passes thrown flat and long are intercepted more often than they look as though they should be; lead the receiver instead.
  • Player morale is easy to ignore for a season and expensive to repair afterwards.

Editorial verdict

A football game that is mostly a management job. The throwing takes a minute to learn; the salary cap takes longer.
