What it is
Gobble puts you underneath a small town as a hole in the ground that swallows whatever passes over it. You start able to take a bin or a bollard; you finish able to take a building.
The whole game is built on one rule — everything you eat makes you larger, and size decides what you may eat next. Each level sets a target and a boundary, and the interest is in the order you work through the street furniture.
How it plays
Levels are grouped into chapters and take a couple of minutes each. You may stop between any two of them, which is what makes the game a good short sitting.
Later chapters add obstacles that cannot be eaten at all and people who must be avoided rather than swallowed — the point at which the arcade game turns into a route-planning puzzle.
Controls
On a computer, the arrow keys or WASD move the hole; there is nothing else to press.
On a phone or tablet you drag with a finger and the hole follows. Both schemes are equivalent; neither is faster than the other.
What to do first
- Clear the small objects around the edge of the map first. Growing early buys you the whole level.
- Read the target before you move. Some levels ask for a count, not for everything.
- Leave the largest object for last — you will not be able to take it until the end in any case.
Where it trips people up
- Chasing a single big object early wastes the timer you will want later.
- People do not make you larger and several levels penalise taking them; the rule is easy to forget once you are large enough to ignore it.
Editorial verdict
One rule governs everything: eat the scenery, not the people. It is more of a puzzle than it first appears.
